Voice Age Test

How old does your voice actually sound? Five seconds, and you see the two measurements behind the answer.

Press record and read a sentence out loud in your normal speaking voice - no performing, just how you actually talk.

How the Voice Age Test Works

Two acoustic channels feed the estimate, and they are weighted very unevenly on purpose.

Voice quality carries 70% of it. Vocal folds are tissue, and like other tissue they lose elasticity across adult life. The measurement that follows this best is cepstral peak prominence, usually written CPPS, which asks how closely your spectrum resembles a clean harmonic comb. A well-supported voice gives a sharp harmonic structure; a tired or aged one gives a blurrier spectrum with more noise between the harmonics. CPPS supplies three quarters of the voice quality channel. The remaining quarter is a roughness figure built from jitter, the cycle-to-cycle variation in period, and shimmer, the same variation in amplitude, scored 0 to 100 and shown to you in the result.

That split corrects a real error. The clinical thresholds for jitter and shimmer are defined on a sustained vowel, the held note a clinician asks a patient for. This tool records connected speech, where intonation, stress and word transitions change the pitch period on purpose, so normal expressive speaking looks like severe perturbation when compared cycle by cycle. Across eleven real people reading aloud, jitter measured between 2.5% and 8.2%, against a clinical boundary of 1%. Every one of them was being aged by roughly fourteen years for speaking normally. CPPS was designed for connected speech and does not have that failure mode.

Speaking pitch carries the other 30%. Average pitch does move with age, but not along one path for everybody. Feminine voices tend to drift gradually downward through adult life. Masculine voices tend to lower until middle age and then rise again somewhat in later years, giving a U-shaped trajectory. The tool applies whichever curve matches the gender read-out it measured from the same recording.

Pitch gets the minority vote for a specific reason: the difference between two people of the same age is much larger than the average difference between decades. Weighted heavily, pitch stops being a signal about age and starts being a signal about who you happen to be. An earlier version of this tool leaned on it harder and made that mistake, reading a perfectly ordinary 140 Hz male voice as 44 years old.

Reading Your Result

The result gives you four things, and the estimate itself is the least informative of them.

Voice age test result showing an estimated age, the likely age range and the traits behind the estimate
A real result from this page: a 20-second public-domain LibriVox reading played in as the microphone input and analysed in Chrome. Your own numbers will differ.
The estimateA single age in years, plus a band of nine years on either side of it. The band is the real answer; the single number is just its centre.
Two channel readingsWhat voice quality alone concluded, and what pitch alone concluded. When they disagree by more than eight years, the estimate is standing on shaky ground and the result says so.
Roughness scoreYour combined jitter and shimmer reading on a 0-100 scale. It is a minority input now, but still moves before a rounded age in years does.
Raw measurementsOpen the raw panel for cepstral peak prominence, jitter, shimmer and harmonic-to-noise ratio, the actual figures behind the estimate.

If the two channels point in different directions, that deserves more attention than the headline figure. A young roughness reading with an old pitch reading usually means your natural speaking pitch simply sits away from the average for your age, which is common and unremarkable. The reverse pattern, young pitch with rough quality, more often means the recording itself was noisy.

Why It Might Read Older Than You Are

This is the most common complaint about every voice age checker on the web, and most of the time the tool is measuring the room you recorded in.

Microphone and room. Background noise, reverberation and a cheap capsule all blur the harmonic structure this test reads, in the same direction an ageing voice does. There is no way to separate noise that came from your vocal folds from noise that came from your kitchen. This tool sets its baselines for a laptop microphone in an ordinary room instead of a sound booth, so its numbers differ from clinical reference values you may find quoted elsewhere.

What the tool does about it. It measures how clean your recording is, then compensates. The quiet frames between your words give the noise floor of your room and microphone, and comparing that against the level of your voice gives a true signal-to-noise ratio, where 12 dB counts as a poor recording and 34 dB as a clean one. Noise flattens the harmonic structure that cepstral peak prominence measures, pushing it down by about 3.2 dB between a clean take and one at 10 dB signal-to-noise, which alone is worth roughly ten years of apparent age. Those 3.2 dB are added back before the estimate is formed, and the jitter and shimmer thresholds are raised to match. Without that, one synthetic voice read 25 when clean and 32 with only noise added on top. The same sweep now moves the estimate by at most 3 years. The trade-off is that a genuinely hoarse voice in a noisy room will read younger than it is, which is the direction this tool prefers to err in.

The full noise test, run on three real recordings at seven noise levels, is written up in how background noise changes a voice test result, including the case where the correction flatters a voice that is already rough.

Condition on the day. A cold, a dry throat, a long day of talking, or the first hour after waking all raise jitter and shimmer measurably. Record in the afternoon, after you have been speaking normally for a while, and drink some water first.

How you speak into it. Reading in a performed or deliberately deep voice changes both channels at once. Sitting too close to the microphone distorts amplitude and inflates shimmer. Speak at a normal volume, roughly a forearm away, and read a real sentence instead of holding a single note.

Record three times and take the middle result. If all three cluster together the reading is at least stable, whatever it says.

Using It to Track Your Own Voice

Comparing yourself to a population average is the weakest use of this tool. Comparing yourself to yourself is the strongest one, and it needs only one discipline: keep everything except your voice constant.

Same room, same device, same distance, same passage read aloud, same rough time of day. Under those conditions the roughness figure becomes a usable measure of vocal condition over weeks and months. Singers and voice actors use the same logic to spot fatigue building up before it turns into a problem, and anyone doing voice training can watch it to make sure a new technique is not being bought at the cost of strain.

When you do this, watch the raw numbers rather than the age figure. Cepstral peak prominence and the roughness score are what is actually measured; the age in years is a rounded interpretation, and rounding hides small movements.

One caveat: a voice change that appears suddenly and lasts more than two or three weeks (persistent hoarseness, a voice that tires quickly, losing your voice for no clear reason) belongs with a doctor. Nothing measured here is a diagnosis, and a website cannot tell the difference between ageing and something that needs looking at.

How to Read Your Voice Age Fairly

A voice carries information about vocal fold condition. Vocal fold condition correlates with age. That chain has two links, and both of them are loose.

The spread between individuals of the same age is considerably wider than the average change from one decade to the next, which sets a hard ceiling on how precise any acoustic age estimate can be, this one included. Smoking, hydration, singing training, reflux, hormonal changes, and simply how much you use your voice all shift the reading independently of how many birthdays you have had. Human listeners guessing a stranger’s age from voice alone tend to be off by about a decade, and no measurement here beats that by much.

The likely range is nine years on either side for that reason. Academic work training deep models on labelled data reaches a mean absolute error of about five years; a handful of acoustic parameters in a browser cannot beat that, and the honest error here is around ten years.

The estimate is also capped at both ends, roughly 16 to 56. Children’s voices and elderly voices both sit outside the range the underlying reference figures cover, so a reading near either limit means only that you are somewhere beyond it. The upper cap was lowered from 68 in September 2026, because readings that high turned out to come from noisy recordings far more often than from older voices.

Take it as a curiosity and a tracking tool, not as a fact about you. If you want the fuller picture from the same five seconds, the main voice rater adds a 1-10 quality score, or the voice gender detector covers where your voice sits on the masculine-to-feminine scale.

Measured on Real Recordings: How Stable the Age Estimate Is

The same three LibriVox readings, analysed by this page's code as one 20-second take and as seven overlapping five-second takes.

ReaderFull take: estimate (band)Seven five-second takes
Reader A, healthy voice31 (22 to 40)29 to 36
Reader B, healthy voice35 (26 to 44)33 to 37
Reader C, rough recording47 (38 to 56)45 to 49

Single takes moved by four to seven years. The two healthy voices overlapped, but the rough recording read oldest in every take. That is why the result is shown as a band. More detail is in how background noise changes a voice test.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old does my voice sound?

Record five seconds and you get an estimated age in years plus a likely range of nine years on either side. Voice quality accounts for 70% of the estimate and your average speaking pitch for the other 30%. Three quarters of that voice quality share is cepstral peak prominence, which measures how cleanly your spectrum forms a harmonic comb, and one quarter is a roughness figure from jitter and shimmer. Both channel readings are shown alongside the estimate, so you can see which one pulled the answer up or down.

How does a voice age test work?

Vocal folds lose elasticity gradually through adult life, and the sound they produce carries a less clean harmonic structure as a result. The main measurement here is cepstral peak prominence, which scores how sharply your spectrum resembles a regular harmonic comb and was designed for connected speech. Jitter, the variation in length from one vibration cycle to the next, and shimmer, the same variation in loudness, are combined into a roughness figure that contributes a smaller share. Speaking pitch adds a second, weaker clue, because its typical trajectory through life differs between masculine and feminine voices.

Can you really guess someone’s age from their voice?

Roughly, and only within a wide band. Listeners guess a stranger’s age from voice alone with an error of about a decade, and an acoustic method is in similar territory. What a voice actually carries is a signal about vocal fold condition, and that correlates with age without being determined by it. A 60-year-old singer with a well-maintained voice can read younger than a 30-year-old who smokes, and both readings are acoustically correct.

Why does it say I sound older than I am?

Usually the room and the microphone. Laptop microphones and untreated rooms add noise that blurs the harmonic structure this test reads, in the same direction an ageing voice does. The tool now measures the noise floor in the quiet frames between your words and compensates for it, and it sets its baselines for consumer hardware. An earlier version used clinical reference values recorded in a sound booth with professional equipment, and it read about ten years old for almost everybody. Being tired, getting over a cold, or recording first thing in the morning all push it upward too.

How accurate is a voice age detector?

Treat the range as the answer, with the single number as its centre, and treat both as an estimate. The range is deliberately nine years wide on each side, because that is roughly the honest error of this method. There is no acoustic measurement that pins down chronological age, because the spread between individuals of the same age is far larger than the average change per decade. Where it is genuinely useful is in comparison with yourself: record under identical conditions a few months apart and the direction of change means something, even when the absolute figure does not.

What changes in a voice as it gets older?

Several things at once. The vocal folds thin and stiffen, so vibration becomes less regular and the tone slightly breathier. Breath support weakens, which shortens phrases. Pitch moves, though not in the same direction for everyone: feminine voices tend to drift downward through adult life, while masculine voices lower into middle age and then rise somewhat in later years. This cluster of changes is known as presbyphonia when it becomes noticeable.

Can I make my voice sound younger?

Some of it responds to use, some of it does not. Hydration, not shouting, not smoking, and simply using your voice regularly all help keep vibration regular, and vocal exercise has a real effect on fold condition much as physical exercise does on muscle. Structural change with age is permanent, so the most useful habit is to track the trend over months under the same recording conditions.
